Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” — Robert Collier

Ah, the life of a carpenter! It’s not just about the satisfying sound of saws and the smell of fresh-cut wood; it’s also about the endless puzzle of fitting pieces together without wasting precious material. After spending countless nights wrestling with the complexities of wood cutting algorithms for a client carpentry project, I found myself on an epic quest for the Holy Grail of layout optimization. Join me as I recount my journey filled with struggle, revelation, and a sprinkle of AI magic!

The Struggle: Sleepless Nights and Wood-Wasting Frustrations

For a whole month, I turned into a nocturnal creature, fueled by coffee and determination. Each night, I faced the same question: “How can I cut these pieces most efficiently without ending up with a pile of waste?” The complexities were daunting. Different shapes, sizes, and the ever-present demand for flexibility made every solution feel like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

Imagine trying to optimize cuts with rigid panel sizes while managing the chaos of varying piece demands from an Excel input. It felt like a never-ending game of Tetris, and spoiler alert: I was losing!
